What is Check 21?

The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, or Check 21, is a recent federal legislation that was passed in October 2004. It is designed to help increase the efficiency and security of the national check payment system by promoting the use of electronic image technology.

What is Intuit doing to support Check 21 requirements?

As your check provider and a trusted supplier of your financial software, Intuit has updated its checks formats and software to meet Check 21 imaging standards.

What are my options if I am currently using non-Check 21 compliant traditional wallet checks?

1. Intuit recommends that you upgrade your software and purchase Intuit Check 21 Wallet Checks.
2. If you choose not to upgrade your software at this time, Voucher and Standard Checks make an excellent choice and are also Check 21 Compliant.
3. Traditional Wallet Checks will continue to be available. However, Intuit’s guarantee policy does not apply to non-Check 21 compliant checks.

If I choose to continue to use non-Check 21 compliant traditional wallet checks, will financial institutions process my checks?

Since there is no specific timeline or requirements from financial institutions, your financial institution may elect to continue to support non-Check 21 compliant checks. However, as financial institutions begin to implement digital check image transfer technology, financial institutions may require your checks to meet Check 21 industry imaging standards. Intuit has no control over if and when financial institutions will enforce use of Check 21 compliant checks.
